Being a member of the Committee is rewarding and challenging. You will be committed to improving the health of New Zealanders. Some of the skills and knowledge that members will need include expertise in moral and ethical reasoning, law, intervention or observational studies, mātauranga Māori, and experience in providing a community perspective. The specific roles available will be advertised when they are available.
There are four HDECs that meet monthly online. Candidates can apply for any committee regardless of location as all meetings occur online.
You will need to have computer access and skills, as applications are lodged, assigned and viewed online. Strong internet connections are necessary as committee meetings are undertaken via video conferencing.
The successful candidates will need to be available for full-day committee meetings one Tuesday a month, on a rolling basis. Generally, committee members should expect up to one day of preparation for a full meeting with both the meetings and preparation paid at a daily rate. They will also be required on occassion to complete online reviews if an application they were a lead reviewer for is provisionally approved.
It is optional but preferred that members will be able to undertake work between meetings to review lower risk applications and post-meeting approval items such as progress reports or amendments. This additional work is not mandatory, but the ideal candidate would be able to support the work of the HDECs between the regular full meetings.
